Bennie James Thornton

Closed out his earthly life chapter to begin life eternal with his heavenly creator on Sunday, July 3, 2022.  He was born in the small town of Toxey, Alabama on February 23, 1951, son of the late Bennie James Thornton and Ruthie Mae Jones-Thornton.

Bennie was a student in both the Alabama and Pittsburgh school systems before eventually becoming a permanent resident of Erie, Pa.  He obtained employment at the Erie General Electric Plant.  From there, as time progressed, he became self-employed as a carpenter and floor/tile layer.  He was an avid pool player, enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Bruh, as was called by family, was very much the fun-loving friendly people person.  He loved family and enjoyed being with them as well as his friends and associates.

Bennie could strike up a conversation with a perfect stranger and you've never known he just met them.  If you needed a hand, Bruh was the man.  He gave the shirt off his back with no exception..don't ask for his leather jacket thou for that he didn't hesitate to help if you were in heed.  He was free hearted that way, a good way.  He will be sorely missed by all who came in contact with him as he sure was to leave a lasting impression.

Bennie was preceded in death by his beloved parents Bennie Sr, Ruthie Mae, brother Bill j Thornton.

He leaves to cherish his warm and unforgettable memories his children; two daughters Tonia A Thornton (Pittsburgh, Pa); Olivia Thornton (Pittsburgh, Pa.); two sons Bennie J. Thornton 3rd (Pittsburgh, Pa), Spence A. Thornton(Indianapolis, Indiana); two brothers Elgin L Thornton (Pittsburgh, Pa) Tommie L Thornton/Maxie(Toxey,Al); two sisters Betty Simmons/Artis/(Erie, Pa), Katina Howell/Joseph(Waynesboro, MS; five grandchildren Bennie J Thornton 4th, Benniya J Thornton, Riyal L Lowry, Israel, Braxton J Thornton.  Special cousins Russell Thornton, (Erie, Pa) and Earl Ruffin Jr. (Indianapolis, Indiana).

The family will receive their guest at Pitts Funeral Home, 2926 Pine Ave, Erie, Pa, on Tuesday July 12, 2022 from 10:00 am -12:00 noon, with The Celebration of Life at 12:00 noon; with Elder Jamie Gore eulogizing.  Burial will be held at the Erie Cemetery.
