On Monday, July 29, 2024, Rev Cleveland E. Ulmer, was granted eternal heavenly peace and rest by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Rev Cleveland E. Ulmer, also known lovingly as "Rev" was born in Heidelberg, MS to Wallace Ulmer and Vanilla Bridges-Ulmer on May 23, 1937. He was the first born son of eight children. At an early age he united with the Oak Bowery United Methodist Church in Heidelberg, MS. He was united in marriage to Mary L. Harrison in 1957. From this union their four children were born, Donna Jean, Craig Adams, Derrick Andrea', and Daretta Andrett.

Once relocated in Erie, PA, he utilized his skilled trade in automotive electrical and engine mechanics to support his growing family. He soon united with the Morning Star Baptist Church. While there, Rev. Ulmer was an active member of the choir and deacon board.  He was endowed greatly by the aide of the Holy Spirit, both spiritually and intellectually. He attended various seminars in the Ohio and Pa areas, correspondence courses with the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, IL, the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education and also, attended the International Bible Institute & Seminary of Plymouth.

Rev. Ulmer was called into the ministry on April 3, 1978 and was ordained into the ministry on April 20, 1980. As an Evangelist, he carried God's word in Mississippi, Ohio, New York, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Virginia, Michigan and various cities in PA.

He was called to Pastor the Mt Ebal Missionary Baptist Church on October 15, 1982 where he served until his retirement in 2019. As pastor of the Mt Ebal Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Ulmer demonstrated genuine love and concern for all mankind. He instilled in the members to study and learn more about God's Word and tithes. Under his leadership the Lord enabled Rev. Ulmer to ordain numerous deacons and license many ministers.

While the church was originally located at 245 East 10th street, in May of 1999, Rev. Ulmer received a vision from God of a new sanctuary and to relocate the congregation to1617 East 26th street. With God's guidance and the spiritually led cooperation of the members, this vision was completed. On Sunday, July 17, 2005, at 10 am he and First Lady Mary L. Ulmer, lead the march into that new house of worship.

He was an active community leader throughout the City of Erie. Some of his accomplishments include being a founding member of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Greater Erie (IMAGE), serving as president and past chairman of the service committee of the Allegheny Union Baptist Association (AUBA) of the Beaver Valley area, past Asst. Vice Moderator of the AUBA Beaver Valley area, past treasurer of the African American Concerned Clergy, and volunteer chaplain at SCI Albion. He was an active participant of the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE). Rev. Ulmer received many accolades and certificates from government officials, congressmen and mayors. One of his most recent was the Chapel of Four Chaplains Foundation, Legion of Honor Award.

Rev.  was also known as "The Sweet Potato Pie Man", through which he exhibited the spirit of friendliness. He baked a variety of pies under the moniker "Pies by Cleve" but touted his sweet potato pies as ones that were so good they would "make your tongue slap your teeth out your mouth". In the late sixties, despite societal barriers, he was employed by and eventually retired from Kaiser Aluminum as a die welder.

Rev. Ulmer is preceded in death by his wife Mary L. Harrison-Ulmer, his parents Wallace and Vanilla Ulmer, brother Walter "Newt" Ulmer, sister Essmarie Morris and infant son Cleveland Ulmer Jr.. He is survived by 4 children, Donna Preston (Jeffrey), Craig Ulmer (Kelley), Derrick Ulmer and Daretta Toran, 10 grandchildren, Jamica Jacobs, Jamaal Ulmer, Sydonia Ulmer, Aeryk Ulmer, Andrett Gray (Dia), DeDra Toran, Jamar Preston, Derrian Ulmer, Hannah Ulmer and Harrison Ulmer, his 4 great-grandchildren, Aviation Structural Mechanic (Safety Equipment) 2nd Class  Jmilriyon Jacobs (Nakyla), Information Systems Technician 2nd Class AmilRiyana Jacobs,  Akiyah Jacobs and Ziy'ava Davis, a great great-grandson Saint Hatcher, and special family member Khelio Atchison. He is also survived by his Godsons, Pastor Willie Henry (Deborah), Abe Howze, Anthony (PeeWee) and Kayal Moore.

He also leaves behind two brothers, Lee Ulmer(Earnestine) of Erie  and Bill Ulmer(Barbara) of Orangeburg, SC. Three sisters, Josephine Newell (Jimmy C) of Erie, Claudia Ulmer McRae(the late Louis McRae), and Mary M. "Lola" Ulmer of Houston, Texas. Surviving in-laws, Mary Alice Ulmer, Wilma Harrison, Jimmie Lee Ducksworth, Barbara Person (James, Sr.), Dorothy Austin (Jerry), Mary Harrison and Ramona Harrison. He will be greatly missed by his many other relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He will be patiently waiting to see, as Rev. would put it, "My brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus"
