Joseph Kenneth Curlett, born on May 24, 1948, to the parents of Joseph B. Curlett and Hazel K. Young
Curlett, peacefully passed away on Friday, August 25th, 2023, in Aurora, OH. He grew up in the vibrant
Westside community of Little Italy in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Graduating from Strong Vincent High School in 1966, Joseph's dedication to education led him to attend
Gannon University, where he earned both a Bachelor of Science degree in 1970 and a master's degree in
1986, as well as a Secondary Teacher's Certification. His commitment to learning was unwavering.
In August 1970, Joseph was drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam Era Conflict, demonstrating his
sense of duty and patriotism. His journey of service continued in various capacities, as he worked for
every major employer and institution in the City of Erie, including General Electric, the Erie School
District, and the City and County governments. Among his numerous professional endeavors, his time as
a Recruiter-Counselor-Coach at the Opportunities Industrialization Center, Inc., Zoom Program, during
1969-70, was particularly fulfilling.
Joseph's life took him to Harrisburg, PA, where he worked for the Department of Community Affairs
within the State Government. Though he briefly pursued legal studies at Duquesne University School of
Law in Pittsburgh, health challenges led him to pause his legal education. In 1985, his life gained new
purpose and meaning with the birth of his beloved daughter, Chelsea H. Rae, whom he cherished
immensely.
Upon earning his master's degree in 1986, Joseph was rehired by the Commonwealth and held roles in
various departments, ultimately retiring as a Budget Analyst in the Department of Community and
Economic Development in 2006. His passion for education led him to teach at multiple schools, including
Gannon University, where he became an Adjunct Professor.
Joseph's spiritual journey was equally significant. He was ordained as a Deacon in the ministry on
September 10, 1995, while a member at Turner Memorial Missionary Baptist Church in Steelton, PA. His
faith was a guiding force in his life.
Beyond his professional and spiritual accomplishments, Joseph's legacy extended to his involvement in
his community. Notably, he became the first Black candidate to run for the political office of County
Executive in Erie County.
In his retirement, Joseph established two successful business and government consultant companies.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his eldest sister Kathleen Curlett Woodard, a
niece, a great nephew, and a great niece.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter Chelsea H. Rae Curlett, granddaughter Kamryn Noelle
Curlett, three sisters Joanne Curlett, Eileen Carter (Danny), all of Erie, PA, Sharon Curlett of Aurora, OH,
a beloved stepbrother James K. Buchanan, also of Erie, PA, three stepdaughters April James (Derrick),
Deby Taylor(Cephus) and Sheila Johnson, all of Harrisburg, PA and a host of loved family and friends. He
will be remembered for his dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to education,
community, and family.
Friends may visit with the family at Shiloh Baptist Church, 901 East 5th Street, Erie, PA 16507 on Friday,
September 1st, 2023, from 5pm until 8pm and again on Saturday, September 2nd from 9am until 11am,

where a celebration of life will immediately follow, with Rev. Darrell Cook eulogizing and Pastor Anthony
Harris officiating. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery. Professional services are entrusted to Pitts
Funeral Home, 2926 Pine Avenue, Erie, PA 16504.
