Rodney "Rod" Thornton

Rest in Love, Rod! Your Legacy Lives on!

Rodney Thornton, 58, of Pittsburgh, PA, affectionately known as Rod returned to his heavenly Father Thursday, November 25, 2021. Unexpectedly and sadly, it was on Thanksgiving and two days before his birthday. He was born in Aliquippa, November 27, 1962, to loving and adoring parents, the late Deacon James Edward and Emma Mae (Hardaway) Thornton.

Rodney accepted Christ at an early age at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Sinclair Taylor, where he was rooted and grounded in the word of God.

With a keen mind and analytical aptitude, Rodney graduated from Aliquippa High School in 1980 and attended Point Park University, Pittsburgh. His enlistment in the United States Army deployed him abroad (Germany). His career spanned industry and hospitality.

Rod had an affinity for his community of Aliquippa. As a youth, he was immersed in sports. As an adult, he supported and celebrated with the community-at-large. His intent was to attend the football championship game at Heinz Field this Thanksgiving weekend. An avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, he sported the silver and blue proudly.

Rodney loved family and his memories will be cherished by his children, Andre Cummings, Sr., Antoine Cummings, Aurielle Cummings, A'lia Grandison, Ahna (Meleik) Carry, Antoinette Blocker, and Anthony Blocker. Affectionately known as Granddaddy Rod, he leaves 17 grandchildren. The youngest of four children, he also leaves his devoted and loving siblings, Dr. Areva Thornton, Lovell (Ora) Thornton and Dr. Linda D. Thornton.

Smile on, Son, Dad, Brother, Granddad and Friend!  You were a light in the darkest places and a gem in the eyes of many.  We Miss You!
