William Edward Mims Jr., 102, of Jamaica, NY, passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2023. He was born on July 15, 1920 in Atlanta, GA to the late William Sr. and May Willie (Stubblefield) Mims.

Eddie was a faithful and longtime member of St. Albans Congregational Church and served in several capacities, including the Global Ministry. He supported many global projects including the collection of Black dolls for South Africa and the creation of the annual African Global Village to expose members to global endeavors.

Eddie attended Morehouse College to study Engineering; in 1938 he was initiated into the Psi chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated. After graduating he became an active member of the Morehouse Alumni association and continued his service to Omega Psi Phi through the Kappa Omicron chapter. The Kappa Omicron chapter honored his 50+ years of service by establishing the Bro. William Mims Scholarship Award for a graduating male High School Senior from the Bronx.

Eddie served in the U.S. Army from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946. Following his service he worked for the U.S. Department of the Interior until his retirement. Eddie and his wife Jackie, enjoyed traveling; some of Eddie's favorite trips were to Hawaii and Rio De Janeiro during Carnival. They also enjoyed photography, both joining the Southeast Queens Camera Club expanding their photography skills together. Eddie was delighted to learn that the Camera Club recently created a program to teach photography to After School students through the Southern Queens Park Association.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Jackie Dawkins Mims.

He leaves to cherish his memory, sister-in-law, Jean Dawkins Bolden; nieces, Diane Dubinion and Lori (Greg) Sandidge; nephew, Jeffery Bolden; goddaughter, Carolann Greenup; and a host of grand nieces and nephews, and friends.

Friends may visit with the family at Calverton National Cemetery, 1158 Morgan Rd. Calverton, NY, on Tuesday June 13, 2023, from 10:00 am -10:30 am where a home going and Military Honors ceremony will take place with Elder Omar Clea eulogizing. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery. Professional services are entrusted to Pitts Funeral Home, 2926 Pine Ave., Erie, PA 16504.
